Production + Natural Resource Management
Agriculture producers are like all business people. They need to meet consumer demands, as well those of the business itself. Included in these is the responsibility to protect and replenish the natural resources in use while maintaining a profitable business operation. To meet these challenges, ag producers should develop the following four plans:
- Marketing Plan – to ensure sales are secured
- Risk Management Plan – to ensure weather, markets and other variables are addressed
- Agronomic Plan – to ensure that the operation uses the resources in a productive and profitable manner
- Resource Management Plan – to ensure that on-farm and off-farm natural resources are maintained and/or improved for future generation’s and societal needs.
Each these plans have specific goals, but they are intertwined at the operational level. In most cases, the Marketing Plan and Risk Management Plan are developed in unison and perhaps with the same professionals. Likewise, the Agronomic Plan and the Resource Management Plan also have the potential to be developed in unison and with the same professionals.
