Local Food: Heartland Food Network: Local Parameters
 

The Heartland Food Network Defines Local Foods As:

  • Minnesota Grown, as defined by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture or
  • Products certified by Food Alliance Midwest, grown and produced in Minnesota or its bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota or Wisconsin) or
  • Certified organic products from Minnesota or its bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin) or
  • “Socially verified” products produced by self-regulating farmer networks, or through farmer/chef relationships, from Minnesota or its bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin), who share a commitment to an agreed-upon range of practices or
  • Minnesota native freshwater species from Minnesota or its bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin) or
  • Products processed in Minnesota in which no less than 80% of the ingredients named on the label are produced in Minnesota or
  • Processed products in which the primary or distinguishing ingredient is grown, wild-caught or originates in Minnesota or its bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin) or
  • Wild rice identified as 100% Minnesota harvested.
