The Heartland Food Network Defines Local Foods As:
- Minnesota Grown, as defined by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture or
- Products certified by Food Alliance Midwest, grown and produced in Minnesota or its bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota or Wisconsin) or
- Certified organic products from Minnesota or its bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin) or
- “Socially verified” products produced by self-regulating farmer networks, or through farmer/chef relationships, from Minnesota or its bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin), who share a commitment to an agreed-upon range of practices or
- Minnesota native freshwater species from Minnesota or its bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin) or
- Products processed in Minnesota in which no less than 80% of the ingredients named on the label are produced in Minnesota or
- Processed products in which the primary or distinguishing ingredient is grown, wild-caught or originates in Minnesota or its bordering states (Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin) or
- Wild rice identified as 100% Minnesota harvested.
